In 2006, ebusinessware approached a large global insurance and financial services firm to discuss the fact that Microsoft was taking away all support for Visual Basic 6.0 (VB6) by the end of 2007. To mitigate that exposure, the Client asked ebusinessware to assess risk on an application-by-application basis, make recommendations, and implement those recommendations.

ebusinessware used the methodology it has been developing and improving since 1999 to do onshore/offshore projects. This project required sophisticated analysis to prepare for the migration. This included performing inventory analysis, determining the degree of impact for each application, and performing a gap assessment for each applications.

ebusinessware then proposed a strategic migration path for the affected application. The client had hoped that the VB 6.0 code could be automatically converted to VB.NET. Our experience, however, confirmed that most applications required some manual coding effort. Also, some applications had valid reasons to go to C# or J2EE environments.

ebusinessware's engagement team was lead by a Migration Practice Partner with extensive platform migration experience. He lead 2 Systems Analysts in the assessment phase. For the delivery phase, a team of 15 developers and QA resources was assembled on the same floor of ebusinessware's India office to migrate, review, and unit test the code. An onshore team installed and tested the revised code in the Client's QA and production environments.

The Client was pleased that ebusinessware was able to complete the project on time and on budget-a budget that was 50% less than internal estimates. Using ebusinessware also allowed the Client to keep internal resources focused on existing priorities.

The Client was pleased that each application's migration path was considered individually, with special attention paid to each application's environment.

The client achieved significant economies of scale by engaging a single team at the enterprise level.

ebusinessware combines the scale, the right people, the project methodology, and the right cost structure. Migration is an ideal project for an offshore Center of Excellence, and ebusinessware has been doing onshore/offshore migration projects since 1999. Our engineers have deep expertise with the Microsoft and J2EE platforms, migration techniques, and different migration tools. We combine vision and execution to anticipate and deliver on our clients’ needs.
